When YHWH Passes By (Look Away)
music & lyrics by J. Garrett Curry & Sam Meyers
“This particular song was an attempt to escape an ego-centric approach to worship-writing by speaking in third person, instead of first. It avoids simply expressing our own devotion, affections, personal struggles or faith proclamations. Rather, it focuses purely on an overwhelming snapshot of God inspired by several encounters noted in scripture, particularly those experienced by Isaiah, Moses and Elijah. Musically, the verses come off a bit foreboding, with an ascending resolution in the chorus.”
The song alludes to the following scriptures, among others:
- 1 Kings 19:10-18
- Isaiah 6:1-5
- Exodus 33:18-21
- Isaiah 2:10-22
- Job 38
- Psalm 97:5
- Psalm 85:9-11
